Why the dahlia?

D I V E R S I T Y . . .  is the hallmark of the dahlia flower. These impressive blooms range in height from 12″ to 8′, and vary in width anywhere from the size of a large coin to a 12-inch dinnerplate!

Dahlias may form a simple, single row of petals or a more complex pattern of funnel-shaped rows arranged in an elaborate pattern of color.

Beyond their obvious beauty and vibrance, their genetic makeup is unlike many other plants, having significantly more chromosomes and DNA sequences allowing for hybridizing. The result is an enormous collection of wildly colorful flowers in varied form.

Similarly, my vision for Blue Dahlia has evolved over decades of involvement, both professionally and personally, with individuals across the spectrum of age, gender, culture, ethnicity, sexual orientation, diagnosis, religion, cognitive capacities and social and emotional functioning. These experiences and relationships have shaped and fueled my passion, reverence and appreciation of neurodiversity and individual differences.  My hope is that Blue Dahlia will be a place and a community, both physical and virtual, where ALL are welcome to  engage  learn  and  grow

                                                                  Gratefully,

                                                                  Dr. Katie Bond
